#45: Lemmings (Psygnosis, Amiga, 1991)
Lemmings is a game that defies categorisation. It has some genetic makeup in common with god games like Populous, but where that game cast you as a tyrant, bending your followers to your will and smiting all those who stand against you, in Lemmings, your only opponent is the world itself. You don’t accrue followers in order to use them for your own ends, you nudge your subjects along the path to achieve their own goals, to become who they truly are. In Lemmings, the player is less a vengeful god and more an avatar of community spirit.
