#34: North & South (Infogrames, Amiga, 1989)
“The chances of victory are the same for both sides. Everything is possible.” That’s the message that greets you when you begin the game. It’s kind of a troubling message, this idea that both sides are created equal, identical in every way save for the colour of their uniforms and the pattern on their flags. You can get away with it in a game like chess, which is abstractly about war in general, but when the game is based on a very specific war that was very specifically started by slave owners seeking to defend their right to own slaves, it is rather harder to swallow.
