My quest to play every game to have been #1 on the UK’s official games charts has taken me to the end of 1991, which was my favourite year so far.
1991 was a big transitional year, when some Amiga games started really taking advantage of extra capabilities to do amazing new things, but old 8-bit favourites were still able to sell more on occasions. Meanwhile, there’s an important footnote in C&VG’s chart commentary for September, when Bubble Bobble was #1: “look at Sonic the Hedgehog – just missing out on a top ten placing, and it’s a single format console game!” Something else was afoot too.
All of 1991′s reviews in one place:
- Speedball 2 (Bitmap Brothers/Image Works, Amiga)
- Lemmings (DMA Design/Psygnosis, Amiga)
- Magicland Dizzy (Code Masters, Spectrum)
- Armour-geddon (Psygnosis, Amiga)
- Eye of the Beholder (SSI/US Gold, Amiga)
- Bubble Bobble (Software Creations/Hit Squad, Spectrum)
- Manchester United Europe (Krisalis, Amiga)
- Jimmy White’s Whirlwind Snooker (Archer Maclean/Virgin, Amiga)
- Terminator 2 (LJN/Ocean, Amiga)
- Lotus Turbo Challenge 2 (Magnetic Fields/Gremlin Graphics, Amiga)
